"The Courage That My Mother Had" by Edna St. Vincent Millay is about how a girl is describing the courage her mother had. She says how her mother left behind a golden brooch for her before she died and how the girl treasured it more that anything. She says the only thing she would spare it for was the courage that her mother had, and how her mother no longer needs the courage and she needs it now. My feeling toward this poem are that I thought it was somewhat interesting, but it was not my favorite. I did think it unique how the author compares courage to a rock, as if courage is strong ang unbreakable. One poetic device the author uses in this poem is rhyme scheme. The pattern is ABAB, but the author uses many approximate rhymes, such as quarried and had, and also grave and have. Another poetic device in this poem is similes, when the author says, "That courage like a rock. . ." where she compares her mother's courage to a rock using the word "like." Also, the author uses a metaphor, when she says, "Rock from New England quarried. . ." where she compares her mother's courage to a rock without using "like" or "as." Overall, I liked this poem and I would not mind reading other poems by Edna St. Vincent Millay
